Porto Palermo Castle (Albanian: Kalaja e Porto Palermos) is a castle near Himarë in southern Albania. It is situated in the bay of Porto Palermo, a few kilometers south of Himarë along the Albanian Riviera.
Leaving Saranda there is a good spot in halfway in Borsh to stop for refreshment and watching waterfall underneath our feet.
Ali Pasha’s castle in Porto Palermo is worth a visit. Although it is not an imposing building, it is a must-visit for anyone passing through the area.
In a picturesque bay just south of Himara, this 19th-century fortress, also known as the Castle of Ali Pasha, makes for an interesting stop-off along the coastal road. From the seaside and terraces the breeze mixed up with the salty air and sweetness of lavender, mint, sage and lemons. The view to the Albanian Riviera is breathtaking, here the more you look, the more you see.
The well preserved castle was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena. In 1921 the castle was called Venetian.
In 1803 Ali Pasha offered the castle and port to the Royal Navy. At which time the fort only had 4 or 5 cannon implying that Ali Pasha did not see the fort as important for him.

The fort served as former Soviet submarine base during the communist regime in Albania, and nowadays its semi abandoned tunnel and barrack attract attention of visitors, as well as the stronghold walls and gates built by the powerful Ali Pasha of Ioannina.
